"We persist in the belief--against our religious tradition, and in the face of much evidence to the contrary--that if we leave our children wealthy we will assure their happiness." (Wendell Berry, "A Continuous Harmony", 1972, pp. 126)
I heard a woman mention this in a talk one time. She said that it is the greatest mistake to leave your wealth to your children. I have always remembered that. I went to a very wealthy high school and I saw this happen with some of my friends. They were handed everything and it literally - to a point - ruined them.
